Salt Alternatives

[ Video Transcipt ]

Welcome to Kelly the Nurse. Today we're gonna talk about flavor. How to flavor this food of yours without this guy, sodium. Sodium or salt, either way you look at it, is 500 milligrams for just a quarter teaspoon. This is not an option. We're gonna get rid of it right now. Let's talk about what are options.

First of all, any food, herbs, spice, fruit, vegetables, citrus in the produce section, including this little wonder, which is our minced garlic in a bottle, is going to be one of the ways you flavor your food. And I mean you just pour liberal amounts, squeeze lemon juice, orange juice, lime juice, or onions, or scallions, or peppers, or fresh herbs that you can grow in your garden, or grow in your kitchen, or purchase at the grocery store. Cilantro on tacos is amazing. Those fresh herbs or fresh citrus is a great way to season virtually all meat all your food. Experiment with it but you might find that a little bit of rosemary on your chicken when you cook it at night is quite delicious.

The other way to season your foods is going to be with an ever -increasing line of low or no sodium seasonings in the bottles like these. Mrs. Dash is a standby and every time I go to the grocery store or try out a new grocery store I see a new Mrs. Dash. There's several different kinds. This one is lemon pepper which I put on fried chicken. It is amazing. Even regular lemon pepper like this has pretty low in sodium, 80 milligrams for a quarter teaspoon. As opposed to salt that has 500 milligrams at a quarter teaspoon, this is a better option.

This is even a better option. Or you can sprinkle some, you know, squeeze some lemon on your chicken and add some pepper. My Thanksgiving turkey is so delicious that every year all the family comes here and that includes my ex -husband and his mom. They come for my Thanksgiving turkey. Do you know how good my turkey has to be to lure my ex -husband over here to eat with us? It's we enjoy his company and it is delicious What I do with the Thanksgiving turkey or you can do with your everyday whole chicken meal is go up under the skin Put some butter You can get no salt added butter put some unsalted butter up under the skin and then push some fresh herbs under there, some sage or rosemary or whatever herbs you like. You put it in the cavity of the bird or under the skin and it is delicious. No sodium required, no salt invited. It is a delicious way to cook.

So when you're thinking about flavor and you hear I can't have salt so my food's going to taste bland and boring, get that out of your mind. There's a whole new horizon out there for you. So the next time you go to the grocery store, take some of your time, a little bit of your energy and just kind of take a look in the produce section and pull a different herb or a different piece of citrus and go home and cook with it. It is delicious and you'll keep your sodium low enough that you will not end up in the hospital after one big delicious meal.

Thank you for watching.
